THE GENERALS WIFE
Episode 7
Teni’s breath caught in her throat.
Her hands trembled under the table as she stared at Kola, her husband, the man she had betrayed.
His face was calm, but she could see the storm raging behind his eyes.
Kola was a soldier, trained to keep his emotions in check. But she knew that beneath his silence, an explosion was waiting to happen.
Richard shifted uncomfortably in his seat. “Kola, listen, I can explain—”
“Shut up,” Kola said coldly.
Richard clamped his mouth shut.
Kola turned back to Teni. His voice was low but firm. “I asked you a question, Teni. Is it true?”
Teni opened her mouth, but no words came out.
What was she supposed to say? That she had betrayed him with his best friend? That she had lied to him over and over again? That the child he had been celebrating was not his?
Tears welled up in her eyes. “Kola, I… I never meant for this to happen.”
Kola’s expression didn’t change. “So it’s true.”
Teni lowered her head, unable to meet his gaze.
A heavy silence filled the air.
Richard cleared his throat. “Kola, I know you’re angry, but—”
In a flash, Kola slammed his fist on the table. The plates and cups rattled violently.
Both Teni and Richard flinched.
“Angry?” Kola repeated, his voice dangerously calm. “You think I’m angry, Richard?” He let out a bitter laugh. “You slept with my wife. Got her pregnant. Lied to me. And now you sit here telling me you know I’m angry?”
Richard swallowed hard.
Kola leaned forward, his eyes dark with rage. “Do you know what happens to traitors in the army, Richard?”
Richard’s face turned pale. “Kola, please—”
“Traitors,” Kola continued, his voice quiet but deadly, “are not given second chances.”
A cold shiver ran down Teni’s spine.
She had seen Kola angry before, but never like this.
This was different.
This was dangerous.
For a long moment, no one spoke. The tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife.
Finally, Kola stood up, his movements slow and controlled.
He looked down at Richard with disgust. “You are no longer my friend. I never want to see your face again.”
Richard exhaled shakily. “Kola, I—”
“I said leave!” Kola barked.
Richard scrambled to his feet and hurried out of the restaurant.
Teni sat frozen, her hands gripping the edge of the table.
She had expected Kola to explode, to shout, to threaten her. But instead, he turned to her with an eerie calmness.
“Let’s go home,” he said.
Teni’s heart pounded. “Kola—”
“Now.”
She had no choice but to follow him.
The ride home was silent.
Kola didn’t speak. He didn’t look at her. His grip on the steering wheel was tight, his jaw clenched.
Teni wanted to say something—anything—to explain herself.
But what explanation could she give?
When they got home, Kola walked inside and stood in the middle of the living room, his back to her.
Teni hesitated by the door. “Kola, please talk to me.”
He turned around slowly, his eyes cold. “Talk to you? After everything?”
Teni wiped her tears. “I know I made a mistake—”
“A mistake?” Kola let out a humorless laugh. “You call betraying our marriage a mistake?”
Teni’s voice cracked. “I didn’t plan for this to happen, Kola. I was lonely. I thought you wouldn’t come back—”
Kola’s eyes flashed with anger. “So that makes it okay?!”
“No!” Teni sobbed. “I was weak. I was stupid. But I never stopped loving you.”
Kola clenched his fists. “Did you ever think about me, Teni? Did you ever stop to imagine what would happen if I found out?”
Teni covered her face with her hands. “I’m sorry. I swear, I’m sorry.”
Kola stared at her, breathing heavily. “And the baby?”
Teni slowly lowered her hands. “What?”
“The baby, Teni,” Kola said, his voice cold. “Do you plan to keep it?”
Teni felt a sharp pain in her chest. “Kola…”
He took a step closer. “Answer me.”
Teni wrapped her arms around her stomach protectively. “I… I don’t know.”
Kola shook his head. “If you keep this child, every time I look at it, I’ll see your betrayal.”
Teni’s eyes widened. “Are you saying I should get rid of it?”
Kola said nothing.
Teni took a shaky step back. “Kola, no. I can’t do that.”
Kola let out a slow breath, then nodded. “Fine.”
Teni felt a small sense of relief.
But then Kola spoke again.
“Then pack your things.”
Teni’s heart dropped. “What?”
Kola’s eyes were like stone. “You heard me. Pack your things and leave my house.”
Teni felt like the floor had been ripped out from under her. “Kola, please—”
“You made your choice, Teni.” His voice was flat. Emotionless. “Now live with it.”
Teni burst into tears. “Where will I go?”
“I don’t care.” Kola turned away. “You should have thought about that before you betrayed me.”
Teni fell to her knees. “Kola, don’t do this. Please, I love you.”
Kola didn’t respond. He simply walked away, leaving her sobbing on the floor.
Her world was falling apart.
And there was nothing she could do to stop it.
Teni sat on the floor for what felt like hours, crying.
Finally, she wiped her tears and stood up. If Kola wanted her gone, she had no choice but to leave.
She dragged herself upstairs and began packing her clothes.
But as she was folding her last dress, something caught her eye.
A piece of paper on Kola’s bedside table.
Curious, she picked it up.
It was a medical report.
Her eyes widened as she read the words written in bold:
“PATIENT: GENERAL KOLA ADEBAYO.”
“DIAGNOSIS: PERMANENT INFERTILITY DUE TO BATTLEFIELD INJURY.”
Teni’s hands shook violently.
Her mind struggled to process what she was seeing.
Kola was infertile.
He could never father a child.
Which meant…
He had always known the baby wasn’t his.
Teni dropped the paper, her breath coming in quick gasps.
Kola had known all along.
So why had he pretended?
Why had he waited until now to throw her out?
A chilling thought crept into her mind.
What if Kola wasn’t just throwing her out?
What if… he had something much worse planned?
